What is Coronavirus?

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes Coronavirus as a large family of viruses that can cause cold and fever, similar to critical diseases like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). It was discovered in 2019 and is zoonotic in nature, meaning it transmits from animals to human beings. Coronavirus is also called COVID-19. China discovered the novel Coronavirus and named it SARS-CoV-2.

Symptoms of Coronavirus

According to WHO, COVID-19 patients are typically asymptomatic implying they do not experience any symptoms despite the presence of the virus in their body. It may take up to 2 to 14 weeks for the human body to show symptoms of the Coronavirus.

Initial symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and breathing problems. These symptoms may further lead to pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and even death. As of 17 March 2020, there are 7000+ deaths registered due to the COVID-19 virus across 154 countries. You can check the official global statistics of Coronavirus here.

Precautions of Coronavirus

Following the precautions listed below may help prevent the transmission of COVID-19:

  1. Maintain minimum 1-meter distance from a person with COVID-19
  2. If you feel sick (fever and dry cough), seek medical advice and stay home. Self-Isolation is effective.
  3. While sneezing, cover your mouth with shirt sleeves or use a tissue. Discard used tissue immediately.
  4. Avoid using unwashed hands-on nose, mouth, and eyes.
  5. Wash your hands frequently with water and soap. If unavailable, use sanitizer with 60% alcohol.
  6. Disinfect objects and surfaces around you with a cleaning spray or wipe.
  7. Avoid shaking hands with others.

Role of Cleanroom for Coronavirus

The airborne particulate size of Coronavirus is 0.1 micrometers (smaller than SARS and the influenza virus).  They easily penetrate into human lungs and blood majorly impacting human health. Fortunately, proper air filtration limits the entry of virus particles and reduces the scope of molecular contamination. Thus, cleanrooms can potentially reduce the spread of Coronavirus with high-efficiency HEPA filters.
